Description
Monk's robe [COB 13/9/2018]
Long description
Gold colour silk monks robe with a brocade abstract swastika pattern in a lighter yellow/gold. Two triangular pieces of silk in each corner are stitched on separately. There is dark blue stitching forming a rectangle in the middle section of the piece, and leading from the corner of the rectangle to the corner of the piece (up until the triangular pieces). Inside this inner rectangle there are additional pieces of the same fabric forming overlapping rectangles, with some pieces only stitched down on one edge (either with blue or gold thread). Research and responses

This is a namjar, and is used for formal ceremonial occasions and worn Kashaya-style, leaving the right arm bare. This information is from:https://www.thoughtco.com/the-buddhas-robe-450083. Julia Nicholson’s notes suggest that the addition of patches is to make the robe appear to be poor gold. [COB 13/9/2018]
