Research and responses

This bark painting was looked at by Lindy Allen (Senior Curator, Anthropology (Northern Australia), Humanities Department, Museums Victoria) on 19/09/2017 who identified the cultural group as Liyagawurmirri [NC 19/9/2017]

Dated by Howard Morphy, who confirms the artist's name was DJUNMAL, not DJUNMALK as recorded. Djunmal lived c. 1900 - 1970. [HA 29/12/2008]

In an email (not kept) to Jeremy Coote dated 1 June 2017, Lindy Allen (Senior Curator, Anthropology (Northern Australia), Humanities Department, Museums Victoria) notes: '...it is a fine work by Djunmal. The family name for Djunmal is Garrawurra - and as you have in your documentation, he belongs to the Mayarrmayarr section of the Liyagawumirr clan.... From research for the ARC project, I have identified at least 9 works by him in 5 cultural institutions - Art Gallery of New South Wales, Musée quay Branly, Museums Victoria, National Museum of Australia, and Pitt Rivers of course. I feel there is another but do not have it in my spreadsheet. I have his birth date as around 1900, as my research has him identified in an image taken by Hubert Wilkins at Milingimbi in 1923 and he is at least in his early twenties. So consistent with your records, but I have his date of death as 1975 given by family members.' [JC 1 6 2017]
