Red ceramic plate. The plate has three feet. The inside of the bowl is painted with black line drawings of people, animals, plants, vegetables and Mayan glyphs. The base of the plate is signed and dated with the artists name. The scene depicted is the resurrection of the Maize god emerging from the earth symbolized by a turtle carapace. [FB 6/12/2017]

Research and responses

The plate is a reproduction of a plate in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Accession number 1993.565 Kerr number K1892, see http://www.mfa.org/collections/object/codex-style-plate-36320). 'Codex-style plate depicting the resurrection of the Maize god emerging from the earth symbolized by a turtle carapace. His sons the Hero Twins aid in his emergence from the underworld. The hieroglyphic texts include the Primary Standard Sequence (PSS), ending with the name of its owner/patron. Titomaj K'awii, the son of Yopaat Bahlam, ruler of the Chatahn place (an as-yet unidentified major centre in the Mirador Basin, speculated to be the archaeological site of El Tintal). Short nominal phrases within the scene name the Maize god (Hun Ajaw its amnaj, or 'Oe Maize Crocodile Tree')and the Hero Twins (Hun Ajaw and Yax Balam). The bejeweled Maize god emerges from the Underworld through a cracked turtle shell, symbolizing the earth. The Hero Twins pour water onto their father to facilitate his resurrection as Maya farmers' water maize seeds to help them sprout' [FB 6/12/2017]
