Research and responses

This object had previously been in the collections of what is now the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The old NMNH number, which can be found on the object, is 41319.

The entry is listed, along with an illustration, in the NMNH Ledger Book Volume 9, p.73, under the heading ‘Expedition of Maj. Powell to the Pueblos’:

'[Current No.] 41319 [Original No.] 1819 [Name] Earthenware Canteen che, cah, quo, roo [Locality] Moqui [Collected by] Col. J.S. Stevenson [When Entered] 1880 May.’

A very similar canteen of the same provenance remains in the NMNH collections as no. 41320. The accession date for that canteen is given on their collections online as 6 January 1881. [JMC 06/06/2024]
