Research and responses

From 1851 Pitt Rivers was interested in the development of new firearms as a result of his work for the Schools of Musketry. This object was probably part of this work.

Information from Bob Oliver [April 1997] Calibre 14.1 mm. Rifling 5. Muzzle loading percussion cap. The weapon is in generally good condition but with prominent vice marks at two points on the barrel, smoothed down and reblued. Stock and forestock repolished. Lock plate and hammer reblued. All brass furniture repolished. Lacquer left on bayonet. [Details of materials used provided]. There is no sling with this rifle.
