Pitt Rivers undertook excavations at Cissbury in January 1868 and between June - September 1875. He had previously fieldwalked many Sussex hillforts in September 1867. These excavations involved many members of the Anthropological Institute, including James Harrison and George Rolleston. Relevant publications are: Lane Fox, A. 1869. ‘An examination into the characters and probable origins of the hill forts of Sussex.’ Archaeologia 42:27-52 and ‘Further remarks on the hillforts of Sussex: being an account of excavations in the forts of Cissbury and Highdown’ Archaeologia 42:53-76.
