Research and responses

Examined by Sally McLendon, Hunter College, CUNY, June 1991. She describes this basket as follows: warp of hazel shoots and weft of ?willow root (base) and conifer root (sides). Half-twist overlay pattern in black (maidenhair fern) on white (bear grass) with brown (woodwardia fern dyed with alder bark) at base only. Made for sale, c. 1890 - 1900.

Examined during a research visit on 14 September 2010 by Hoopa basket maker and culture bearer Deborah E. McConnell who noted that the top is contemporary rather than traditional in style, which suggests this was made for trade. This probably wouldn't have been used for food as includes the black maidenhair fern in the materials. The pattern looks like the rattlesnake design. This may not be a Hoopa basket, likewise with the others categorised as such because even though from the correct geographical area different groups lived together on the reservations.
