Long description
Japanese paper charm. The charm is printed on the front with two rows of Japanese characters in black ink and stamped with a hexagonal stamp in red ink. The back of the charm is stamped with a square stamp with Japanese characters in red ink. The folded paper envelope [.2] contains a rectangular piece of paper printed with three rows of Japanese characters on one side in black ink. [The charm is attached to a duplicate amulet through a strung paper label [see 1985.53.68 .1]. FB 11/01/2013]

Research and responses

The inscription on this object was transcribed and translated by Fusa McLynn who volunteered at the Museum in 2013 as: “Kokuhei chusha Shimotsuke no kuni Ichinomiya”, The principal shrine in Shimotsuke province (present Tochigi prefecture). “Futarasan jinja chugai yoke o-mamori”, Amulet against insect damage from Futaraisan shrine. (Reverse) “Shamusho in”, Seal of the shrine office. [MJD 18/03/2013]
