- Research and responses
The inscription on this object was transcribed and translated by Fusa McLynn who volunteered at the Museum in 2013 as: “Nikko-san Ryodaishi”, Two Great Masters at Mt. Nikko. “Yakuyoke go-shugo”, Amulet to ward off from evil. *Two Great Masters are Jigen daishi and Jie daishi. Jie daishi is also called and better known as Gansan daishi. His other names are ‘Tsuno daishi’ and ‘Mame daishi’; the former means ‘horned great master’ and is represented as a horned devil (he became a devil to fight against plague), the latter means ‘small great master’ which is represented with small figures of 33 different aspects of Kannon.
