- Moose-hide mitten (right hand), cloth-lined, with beadwork decoration.
- Long description
- Moose-hide mitten (right hand), cloth-lined. Back of hand decorated with dense floral beadwork: cuff entirely covered with ribbon appliqué, the ribbons forming a fringe at the seam. Cuff edged at wrist and opening with bands of whitish skin which probably had hair on it at some time. The beadwork includes metallic faceted beads especially near the fingertips.

With reference to date made, Cory Silverstein, a visiting researcher on 21/3/2001 offered the following information: "Green 'stroud' woollen under white unsmoked deer or caribou hide; green stroud not available after 1880, but might be recycled. Some materials not available before 1850 (certain colours of beads and twill lining with cotton warp and woollen weft threads)." She also noted: "The beadwork appears to be Athapascan type - see Kate Duncan book re. metallic 'tips' on flower petals." [LP 27/3/2001]
I would call this a mitten. Gauntlet is OK because it has a cuff, but it should not be classified as 'armour weapon'. - Laura Peers 21/3/2001.
