Long description
Amulet, oval medallion with religious figures painted onto mother of pearl shell on both sides, in a silver mount with a loop for suspension. On one side of the pendant there is a painting of the Virgin Mary depicted with a crown and a halo, and holding a baby. The garment she is wearing is painted red and gold. At the base of the figure there is a crescent shape, and then a sphere, so it appears as though the Virgin Mary is balancing on it. On the other side there is a painting of ?Jesus seated on a wooden chair, with three gold tridents appearing to come out of his head. He is wearing a crown of thorns, and holding a cross in one hand and a ?plant in the other. He is wearing a blue and gold robe, and their is another figure kneeling at his feet in prayer wearing a hooded red robe. On the right hand side their is hand holding a weighting scale, only one side of it is depicted, and perhaps this is a scene of the Last Judgement[?]. Around each figure there is a painted border consisting of floral design on a gold and purple background. Each painting is framed behind a glass panel, and there is a decorative looped section at the top of the mount to which the loop for suspension is attached. [RB 01/06/2012]
