Taken from Miao Costumes from Guizhou Province South West China by Deryn O' Connor. Catalogue of an exhibition at James Hockney Gallery, WSCAD, Farnham, p.34 - p.35 "Women: everyday; plainer version of festive: festive; sleeved, thigh-length decorated jacket, worn over very short and full knee-length skirt. Skirt of 3 tiers, two gathered, the lowest decorated in was resist and often embroidered, 63 and 126. Three front aprons, a shaped plain front one reaching from neck to top of third tier of skirt, then two short rectangular ones, one irchly embroidered in red silk 64, the other patterned in wax resist, tied with woven silk band. Hand-woven cotton putttees held in place at top with silk ribbon. Finally, a sleeveless overjerkin with square neck, broad shoulders narrow back and front which is supposed to have a martial connotation. Headdress; a short cap of a folded square of wax-resisted cotton, with a metal band holding in place a top piece with red tassels supposed to indicate their warrior status, see 60... Techniques: yarn construction and weaving of plain weave cotton cloth, but increasing use of commercial cotton for wax resist. Decorative weaving of narrow bands of different width and fibre for ties for baby carriers, aprons and puttees. Wax resist very important. Embroidery - cross stitch and allied stitches for aprons and jacket pieces, versions of satin stitch and chain stitch for baby carriers." [FB 24/07/2012]
