Description
Embroidered woman's jacket. [FB 08/06/2012]
Long description
Embroidered woman's jacket. The jacket is made from indigo dyed cotton that has been calandered to shiny surface. The cotton is in two pieces with a seam down the centre of the back of the jacket. The front of the jacket has been decorated at the hem and around the neckline of the jacket with wool embroidered geometric patterns. The sleeves of the jacket have been embellished with a band of wool embroidery approximately 47 mm wide comprising geometric patterns in yellow, red, white and pink on a green background. The cuffs of the sleeves are made from a printed white cotton textile with printed green and blue pattern. The same textile edges the side splits of the jacket at the front. The back of the jacket is more decorative than the front with the sleeves, the bottom half of the jacket and a band running down the centre of the jacket embellished with brightly coloured silk embroidery. The back of the sleeves of the jacket are both decorated with a band of silk yarn embroidery approximately 164 mm wide. The pattern consists of geometric patterns in white, pink, yellow and blue on a green background. The bottom half of the jacket approximately 135 mm wide to the hem is decorated with a similar pattern of silk yarn embroidery as found on the sleeves. A vertical band of silk yarn embroidery approximately 146 mm wide has been stitched down the centre of the back of the jacket with geometric patterns. The top of the back of the jacket is decorated with a horizontal band with a zigzag edge of embroidered geometric patterns in brightly coloured woollen yarn. [FB 08/06/2012]

Research and responses

See Miao Costumes from Guizhou Province South West China by Deryn O' Connor. Catalogue of an exhibition at James Hockney Gallery, WSCAD, Farnham.

Calandering makes the indigo dyed cloth shiny and is prized by the Miao. It is done by folding the material and beating it with a wooden mallet on a flay stone. [FB 01/06/2012]
