Description
Figure with pointed hat and turtle carapace - 'scare devil' type. [SM (Verve) 22/08/2013]
Long description
Figure with pointed hat - 'scare devil' type. The figure is carved from a single piece of wood. It has a pointed black hat coloured with black pigment. The face is painted red with an open carved mouth full of pointed teeth that are painted white. The mouth has a carved white band around the edge too. The tongue is carved projecting from the centre of the mouth. The figure's arms are missing. There are two holes on the front of the chest where they were originally attached. The figure's left leg is also missing below the knee. A curved piece of wood on the figure's back may represent a turtle shell carapace. A short piece of wood has been driven through the front of the leg at the break. The figure has a very large crack running the length of its body, another on the back of the hat and a third on the front of the hat and face. [SM (Verve) 22/08/2013]
