Long description
Hat decorated with embroidery and engraved metal. Part of a woman's outfit consisting of a hat, jacket [2010.3.14 .1], skirt [2010.3.14 .2], puttees [2010.3.14 .3 & .4], bodice [2010.3.14 .5] and belt [2010.3.14 .6]. The hat is made from two pieces of cotton textile dyed indigo. one piece of cotton has been used to cover a circular frame made from ?metal and is approximately 160 x 145 mm in diameter to make the top of the hat. This has been decorated with embroidery, wool, jacobs seeds and metal. White round jacobs seeds have been sewn around the outside of the circle with two loops of jacobs seeds threaded onto white woollen yarn on one side. The circle has been embroidered with four 'star' like patterns in red, white, blue, green and pick woollen yarn. In the centre is a diamond shaped piece of engraved silver metal. The metal has been engraved with a curvilinear design consisting of short dashes. At each point of the diamond metal piece two circular metal discs have been attached. The metal pieces are attached with cotton yarn through perforations made at the edges of the metal. At one point of the diamond shaped metal a tuft of red and pink yarn has been sewn. The circular top of the hat is attached to a larger piece of cotton textile, hand stitched together with blue cotton yarn, which form the sides and back of the hat. This part of the hat is edged with a length of lighter blue cotton textile at each end and partially lined on the inside with white cotton textile. The bottom edge of the hat is edged with red cotton textile. The back of the hat has been decorated with metal, jacobs seeds and embroidery. There are four horizontal rows of circular metal discs which have been stitched to the hat with white cotton yarn threaded through perforations at the sides of each metal disc. In-between the rows of metal discs are rows of white round jacobs seeds. A larger circle of engraved metal approximately 36 mm in diameter has been sewn to the centre of the back of the hat on top of an embroidered section of the hat. The embroidered section of the hat has been embroidered with pink, green, yellow and blue woollen yarn 'stars' and a geometric cross stitch design in reed, green, yellow, blue and white woollen yarn. Three tufts of pink and red woollen yarn have been attached to the back of the hat and loops of jacobs seeds hang in eight places from the back of the hat. [FC 08/07/2010]
