The braid is made from peach coloured satin ribbon with flowers embroidered in red and foliage in yellow and orange silk yarn. At the top of the sides of the hat a length of silver foil has been stitched with white cotton yarn. The front of the hat has been decorated with appliqué. The appliqué consists of stiffened silk textile in pieces, mostly leaf shaped and folded over the front side of the hat. The two outer pieces are made from pink and green silk textile curled over and sewn to the front side of the hat edged with silver foil with four tassels, two on either side with small round beads attached. the tassels are made from pink, yellow, green, red and white synthetic yarn. Surmounting the hat is a butterfly/dragonfly, a Chinese symbol of good luck, made in several sections. The main body of the insect is made from a cylinder of orange silk yarn sewn with green silk thread with silver sequin eyes, one eye is missing. The antennae are made from coiled metal wire with a round bead at the end and a tassel made from cotton yarn in red, pink, white and blue. The wings of the insect are made from stiffened silk textile in green and pink edges with silver foil and decorated with round metallic sequins sewn onto the silk textile with white cotton yarn. The insect is sitting on a flower made from folded stain ribbon in pink, green and orange. The insect is attached to the flower on a tube of plastic covered with pink silk yarn. The leaves of the flower are made from green stiffened silk decorated with round metallic sequins and white and pink cotton yarn. The front of the hat has nine panes of stiffened silk textile in green, pink and orange folded over and edges with silver foil. Each panel is decorated with elaborate embroidery in satin stitch in green, pink and orange silk yarn outlined with crouched silk gimp.
