Description
Skin pouch decorated with tassels and painted with brown pigment. [FC 09/11/2009]
Long description
Skin pouch decorated with tassels and painted with brown pigment. The pouch is made from soft animal hide and is light tan in colour, possibly made from rabbit skin. The pouch is long and narrow and is painted on the front and back of the hide with horizontal and vertical lines and other geometric patterns. On one side of the pouch is an oval shaped patch stitched to the pouch with a fine copper alloy wire. At the top of the pouch the animal skin has been plaited into two strands interwoven with white cotton yarn and tied together. The bottom of the pouch has been decorated with tassels attached to the pouch in three bunches. the tassels appear to have been made from white cotton thread and white synthetic yarn. The lengths of yarn have been plaited, knotted and left long at the ends to form tassels. The tops of the lengths of plaited yarn have been braided onto the pouch with green and pink cotton yarn. The central bunch has also been braided with silver metallic yarn and orange cotton yarn. [FC 09/11/2009]

Research and responses

Comment made by member of the Archaeological Leather Group during their visit in April 2014 - this skin looks like a leg piece or possibly whole small animal. [MJD 16/12/2014]
