Description
Pair of straw sandals with thongs made from twisted straw bound with cloth. [MdeA 02/06/2009]
Long description
Pair of straw sandals with thongs made from twisted straw bound with cloth. Rice plant or soft rush has possibly been used to make the sandal as these are the traditional materials for such footwear. The soles of these sandals have been woven using an over-one/under-one pattern (plain weave). The underside of each sole is a little rough with the ends of the plant fibre poking through the weaving in places. The sandals are held on the feet by means of a thong. The thongs on each sandal are made from twisted plant fibre. Both ends of each thong have been woven into the sole of the sandal and are bound with plant fibre at the sides. The thongs have then been bound with white and red material creating a red and white striped pattern on each thong. The thongs are also attached to the sandal in the centre of the upper sole where twisted white textile has been pushed through to the underside of the sole and secured. This forms a toe post. The sandals are held together with a loop of synthetic string. [FC 11/6/2009]
