- Long description
- Wooden stool, carved from a single piece of wood. The seat of the stool is roughly circular and flat with a raised edge. The maximum diameter of the flat section is 275 mm approximately. The edge of the seat is raised approximately 8mm from the top of the seat. The seat is approximately 45 mm deep [but this measurement varies around the seat]. The side of the seat expands from the top to a maximum circumference [1035 mm approximately] in the middle. From there the side tapers inwards to meet the seat supports. The flat top of the seat is stained red /brown and the edge or side of the seat stained dark brown. The whole of the top and sides of the seat appear to be varnished. The seat supports are carved into the form of four human figures. The figures are standing with legs apart and arms raised. The figures are approximately 310 mm in height. The carving on the features of the figures has been picked out with dark brown staining. The figures are wearing shorts [stained dark brown] and their necks, shoulders and navels have also been stained dark brown. The figures extend from the base of the seat to the base of the stool. The figures stand with their arms raised and elbows bent. Each figure is joined to the next at the hands. Between the figures are four animal figures? with the features also picked out in dark brown staining. The animal figures extend from the elbows of the figures to the base of the stool and have an approximate maximum height of 150 mm. The base of the stool is ring shaped and stained brown all over. It has a maximum circumference of 980 mm. The backs of the figures, animal figures and interior of the ring are unstained and undecorated as is the underside of the seat. The fronts of the figures, animal figures and base of the stool are all varnished in places. [MdeA 07/03/2008]
