Description
Woman's hat decorated with metal jingles and lapis lazuli stones.
Long description
Woman's hat. The main body of the hat is a brimless multi-coloured cotton-lined woven cap. A metal panel has been sewn on to the front of this. The panel is in three linked pieces, the largest of the pieces being in the centre of the front of the hat and the others at the side. The centre piece measures approximately 274 mm in length. The side pieces each measure approximately 76 mm in length. The centre panel is decorated with nine pieces of polished and cut lapis lazuli stone. There are two small circular stones at each end of the panel. The rest of the stones are arranged in a line alternating between teardrop and circular stones with the largest teardrop shaped stone set in the centre. Metal jingles and chains hang down from the bottom edge of the central panel. There is also a jingle hanging from one of the side panels and remains of another on the other side panel. Each side pane has been set with a circular piece of lapis lazuli. A raised domed metal section has been sewn to the crown of the hat along with several other metal ornaments, jingles and chains and one piece of metal with an oval shaped piece of lapis. The raised section on the crown is approximately 80 mm high. It is decorated with four circular pieces of lapis lazuli on the bottom level and one circular piece on the top level. There are loops around the bottom edge of the domed section. Some of these have metal shapes and jingles attached. On the top level of the domed section there are six fixed loops some of which have rings attached suggesting that jingles or ornaments also hung from them at some point. A rectangular section of quilted or padded cotton textile hangs down the back of the hat. The upper surface of this has jingles and metal ornaments sewn all over it. [MdeA 07/09/2006]
