Description
Velvet-lined wooden presentation box with hinged lid, stamped with a makers mark on the lid. A closure at the front of the box connects the lid and base. [For the ceremonial tankard see 2006.78.2 .1] [SM 1/4/2008]
Long description
Wooden box with hinged lid. The box and lid are lined in black velvet. Beneath the black velvet the box is padded to support the tankard. The top of the lid is stamped with a maker's mark and 'Crown and Rose' 'Est. 1700 London' 'Cast Pewter' and 'by Royal Selangor'. The velvet lining of the lid is also stamped with the mark and inscription. The lid is attached with two white metal hinges and the box has a closure at the front. The box is a presentation box which was given with the ceremonial tankard 2006.78.2 .1. It was given to Dr John Hood, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd on the occasion of the "Topping Out" of the Pitt Rivers Museum on 9th February 2006.
