Description
Conical hat made from a gourd decorated with woollen yarn, recycled textile, and beads. [JP 4/10/2004]
Long description
The gourd is discoloured and damaged and there are areas that have been repaired with handmade paper. On the inside of the hat the rim is strengthened with a strip of cane stitched on to the hat with yellow cotton thread. Also attached to the inside of the hat is a circle of cane strip 160 mm diameter. This is secured to the inside of the hat with dark blue stitching. Around it is wrapped blue woollen yarn, and attached to it is a long chin strap made from blue wool yarn and white string twisted together. Two very small woven rattan loops secure this strap tightly under the chin and hanging from the end of the strap are three larger woven rattan loops - the purpose of which, if any, is not clear. On outside of the hat the rim is decorated with a band of faded red textile along the centre of which is stitched very small beadwork flowers in a row. On either side of this band are stitched four strings of wool laid parallel to each other. The two outer strings are made from blue wool and white string twisted together, and the two inner strings from red and yellow wool twisted together. The top of the hat is similarly decorated and is topped with a blue and green woollen 'pompom' or tassle. [JP 4/10/2004]
