- Long description
- Textile bag [.1] containing a pair of iron tongs [.2], a knife [.3] and a wooden sheath [.4] for the knife, with kindling in it. The bag is long, triangular and shaped to fit the sheath. It is made from ?carpet with a woven faded floral design and has a ?cotton panel on either side. It has a carrying strap made from knotted rope. The tongs are made from iron and have an iron ring at the butt. The knife has a single edged curved blade and a wooden handle with incised decoration on the grip and an expanded butt with incised decoration/maker's mark. The sheath is made from a piece of hard wood. it has a hole for the knife and another round hole with small pieces of fir tree twig kindling in it. [SM 02/07/2007] The bag if very faded and dirty but red, yellow and purple pigments can be identified. It has been roughly stitched together in places and in one area is coming apart. The knotwork on the handle is complex. The wooden sheath has split in two and is carved with two compartments. In one of these is the knife, and in the other are some twigs of a fir tree, presumably used for kindling. The blade of the knife is curved. The handle has a band of blackened decorative carving around it and the butt is carved with initials or a maker's mark. [JP 27/8/2004]
