Description
Part of a complete woman's dance costume: Headdress of palm leaf strip intricately folded into a three-dimensional band of two rows of densely packed triangles. [JP 18/6/2004]
Long description
The headdress consists of a three dimensional band (390mm long, 40 mm deep and circa 30 mm wide) of 12mm wide strips of palm leaf folded in such a way so as to produce a band of two rows of 70 triangles, very tightly packed and tied together with a length of palm strip. The base of each folded segment, and the underside of the headdress, is flat. The top of each folded segment is shaped into a pair of flat triangles. One of these rows of triangles projects forwards when the headdress is worn, the other row of triangles projects upwards. The row of triangles which extends upwards is in addition ornamented with loops and long flat extensions, of fine palm leaf strip. A tie of twisted palm leaf strip at either end of the band secures the headdress to the wearer's head.
