- Long description
- Part of a writing set. Large writing box with separate lid and compartment divider inside of black and metallic lacquerwork, rectangular in shape with rounded corners. On the front is an image of a cart set to rest in front of a tree painted in brown and black. [JP 16/4/2004]The base of the box [.2] is lacquered black on the side. The bottom is of black lacquer with tiny metallic specks of gold and bronze. onto which has been sprinkled gold and bronze metal dust when the lacquer was still wet. This technique is achieved by sprinkling metal powder onto still wet lacquer and then after drying applying a further coat of transparent lacquer. The same technique has been used on the inside of the base of the box, on the underside of the lid, and on the divider inside the box, but on these areas the metal powder has been applied much more densly so that they appear almost entirely a gold/bronze colour and only specks of the black lacquered base coat-remain visible. The divider [.3] inside the box is shallow and divides the box into seven compartments - three rectangular shaped compartments in the middle section, and four smaller rectangular shaped compartments at the corners of the box. At either end of the box between the two corner compartments are slightly raised platforms. Into one of these is securely inset a silver oval dish ?for mixing pigment. The top of the lid of the box is decorated with a scene of a wheeled cart laid to rest in front of a tree. The pigments used are brown and black with a small cord attached to the cart being red, and the ground and some of the cart being coloured with further specks of bronze metallic powder. Inside the box is writing equipment - see Other Information. [JP 15/4/2004]
