Description
Hand-painted wooden diptych of the heads of Christ and Mother of God.
Long description
Either icon is painted on a rectangular piece of wood with rounded corners. The back of both pieces of wood is carved in relief with a border incised with lines (the effect of this on the border on the back of the image of Christ is a rope-like pattern, and on the back of the image of the Mother of God a zig-zag pattern). Inside this border is carved a cross. Both crosses are different and, along with the borders, have been highlighted in gold paint. The rest of the carving is painted with a reddish-brown pigment. In addition, along the edge of the border on the back of the image of the Mother of God the artist has incised his name in capital letters. The edges of both paintings is painted red. They are joined by two metal hinges so that they fold together. Attached to the outer side of each of the images is a leather cord painted red, for securing the diptych when closed. [JP 19/2/2004]
