Research and responses

Identified as being from the Pitt Rivers Founding Collection by the label - aside from the initials PR on the label, all the other spurs found with this spur are from the Pitt Rivers Founding Collection have the same label format. [JP 29/10/2003]

Although no match for this object could be found in the Delivery Catalogue a series of spurs numbered consecutively from 1918 to 1950 is listed there and all of these were displayed in the same case as this spur. In the series of numbers from 1918 to 1950 the number 1940 has been missed out. It is assumed that this omission is due to human error and that this spur having the number 1940 on its label is a part of that series. In the Black book entry however 15 spurs numbered from 1928 to 1942 are listed. 15 spurs have already been found but two of these have the same number (1942 and 1942A). Is is probable that the spur in this enty (numbered 1940) is part of that series listed in the Black book entry and that there were found to be 16 rather than 15 spurs when numbering them hence one of them being given the duplicate number 1942A.
