Research and responses

This object was examined along with others from the Chamberlain Collection by Sekiko Matsuzaki-Petitmengin on 27 June 2003 [SM 16/10/2008]

This object was examined by Professor Itaru Chijiwa during his research visit in November 2008. He noted the two figures were Daikoku and his wife Yakami Hime. He also noted that Daikoku has several different names. He is known as Daikoku in Buddhism and is most commonly known as Okuninushi in Shinto, but has other names in Shinto as well. [SM 05/12/2008]

The inscription on this object was transcribed and translated by Fusa McLynn who volunteered at the Museum in 2012 as: (Red seal) “Kasuga jinja no in”, Seal of Kasuga shrine. [El.B 04/05/2012]
