Extract from 'Warp and Weft: A Textile Terminology' by Dorothy K. Burnham, published by Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, 1980. On reeds, pg. 105: 'Reed: an instrument through which the warp ends are passed to keep them evenly spaced and aligned. It is fastened in the batten and also serves to beat in the weft. It is now generally of thin metal strips, called leaves, fastened between two bars of wood or metal. The spaces between the leaves are called dents, and the size of a reed is noted as so many dents to a given unit of measure. '[RJ 18/3/2003]
