- Long description
- Oval coiled basket to go with leather lid (2003.10.50 .2), which was used as a coffee container. Basket made of palm fronds. Oval coiled palm leaf basket. Now contains cloves rather than coffee. The base is lined with leather stitched into the basketry. The exterior is wrapped with thin strips of leather which are strategically threaded under the palm fronds to make two south-facing lines of tooth-shaped pattern. The rim of the pot is undecorated. The leather on the bottom of the vessel has holes punctured in it, possibly to allow the contents of the basket to be aired or to give off scent. The rim of the basket slots into a groove between the rim and an extra circle of coils on the underside of the lid. The inside of the pot is not decorated and the coiled basketry can be seen clearly.
