Description

Long description
Blue rectangular textile with red, blue and white band on either of the longest sides and also edged on these sides with a single row of red, white and black beads. Either end of the textile has a red and yellow twined boarder worked into the weft of the textile, followed by a slightly wider band of white beadwork with small sections of red and black beads alternately, followed by a long fringe of the red and blue warp threads. The textile is divided lengthways into three sections, the section at either ends of the textile is densely covered with broad bands of geometric designs. These are worked into the textile in red, yellow, pink and green cotton yarn using a supplementary weft technique, and are interspersed with tiny white glass beads that have been woven into the wefts. At either end one such band is of brightly coloured wool, and another band reads 'selemat peke' meaning 'safe wearing'. The middle section of the textile has just two rows of three groups of small diamond shaped motifs in red and yellow supplementary wefts. [JP 21/3/2003]
