Description
Rectangular shoulder cloth of very thin red silk covered with resist dye patterns in various colours. [JP 14/3/2003]
Long description
Rectangular textile of thin plain woven ? Chinese silk covered with design worked in tritik and plangi resist dye technique. The textile is predonimantly red with a purple central panel. The muted nature of the colours suggest that natural dyes wer used rather than synthetic dyes that tend to be very bright. The overall design is Indian influenced and is revealed in muted shades of beige, green, yellow, orange, pink and purple. It consists of circles and crosses bordered all around the edge with two zig-zag lines interspersed with dots. At either end of the length of textile is a row of Paisley-type shapes. Star and rosette forms occupy the central panel. The entire textile is edged with a metallic braid, the stitching attaching this braid to the textile is visible on the reverse side. The braid is damaged in several areas and the textile has several holes in it. There are also areas that are crudely stitched presumably in an attempt to repair tears. [JP 14/3/2003]
