Description
Saddle bag made from goat hair, used to carry trade items such as salt.
Long description
Saddle bag made from goat hair, used to carry trade items such as salt. The bag is made from three long strips of coarsely woven textile. The three strips have been sewn together along the length. Both ends have then been turned up forming two bag sections and stitched together along the sides and hemmed at the top. The textile is woven in stripes of dark brown and light brown / beige. The main colour of the bag is light brown / beige. One bag section has pieces of dark brown wool textile and a piece of brown and pink woven textile sewn to the bottom corners. This has possibly been done to repair holes in the corners. Both bag sections have a loop of woven wool on one side and a wool rope on the other. These loops and ropes are presumably for fixing the saddle bag to the back of a horse. [MdeA 7/6/2002]
