Long description
Wooden mask of a human face. The mask is painted dark brown and has hair and eyebrows and eyes painted in black paint. The eyes of the face are wide open and staring. Below each eye there is a slit to enable the wearer to see out of the mask. The nose is pointed with two holes for breathing out of. The mouth of the mask is also open in a wide grimace. The lower lip is painted red. The cheeks are carved with diagonal lines running from the side of each nostril down to the jaw. There is a perforation on either side of the mask to enable it to be tied around the head of the wearer. It is currently threaded with string but this appears to be very new and was possibly used to hang the mask for display sometime after collection. [MdeA 16/11/2001]
