Description
Carved ivory lizard with black painted eyes. [LKG 10/07/2009]
Long description
Carved ivory lizard with black painted eyes. The body of the lizard has been incised all over with lines which meet at angles composing patterns of closely packed 'V' shapes. At the highest point of the arched tail these 'V' designs cease and the length of the tail is completed with plain incised rings that circle the tail. Along the top of its body the lizard has 18 upright scales, the largest of which is situated at the middle. The lizard's stance is with raised head and neck, sweeping down to the body in a long curve before rising again at the tail. The feet of the lizard are carved so that the forelegs appear to be stretching forwards while the rear legs seem to be stretched backwards as though running or mid-leap. The overall colour tone of the object is of a slightly ochre-tinged cream. [LKG 09/07/2009]
