Research and responses

Relevant publications: The Evil Eye, a Account of this Ancient and Widespread Superstition, by Frederick Thomas Elworthy, London. John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1895. Horns of Honour and Other Studies in the By-ways of Archaeology, by Frederick Thomas Elworthy, London, John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1900.

Examined on 4 June 2007 by Rabbi Eli Brackman of the Oxford Chabad Society who noted that on one side of the metal charm is a protection and the other a blessing. The inscription for the blessing translates as: 'This child shall grow up to the study of Torah, to chupah - Jewish marriage and good deeds.' [ZM 02/07/2007]

The object 'like a long bladed axe' (see Accession Book) has a short vertical bar beside it, and together they form the Hebrew letter 'He'.
