On top of the hill are burial mounds dating back to the Bronze and Saxon ages. It is reputed that Simon de Montfort marched his army along this way in 1264 to fight King Henry III's men in the Battle of Lewes. A group of large ash trees and a dew pond are believed to mark a medieval boundary. [AP 29/08/2006]
