Pitt Rivers lived in Guildford from 1873 - 1877. [see Chapman, 1981][Bowden, 1991: 83-4][Thompson, 1977: 124] [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]
Pitt Rivers briefly reported his barrow excavations at Guildford in the 1877 Report of the British Association, but the excavations were not fully published until 1980, by PR Saunders. Full reference: Saunders, P.R. 1980. ‘Saxon barrows excavated by General Pitt Rivers on Merrow Down, Guildford.’ Surrey Archaeological Collections 72:69-75. A paper by E. Gardner in 1924. ‘Bronze Age urns of Surrey’ in Surrey Archaeological Collections 35:1-29 may be of relevance to these items. [CB 8/12/2009]
