Research and responses

There are three Santon's in Europe, one in the Isle of Man, one in Lincolnshire and one in Norfolk. The only Xanton I can find is on the western Atlantic coast of France. As none of these are particularly near Cologne [Köln] I suspect that the locations in Primary documentation are incorrect phonetic spellings of Xanten, a settlement located approx. 87 km to the north of Köln, and also the site of Castra Vetera I and Castra Vetera II Roman encampments. See 1884.120.57 for a spear-head also excavated from a grave at Castra Vetera. [MN 29/07/2009]
