Pitt Rivers was in Ireland [serving in the Army] from 1862-66, this object may have been obtained during this period [Bowden, 1991: 60-4]. Trunnion is a knob projecting horizontally from each side of a gun or other object by which it is supported etc. There are a large number of bronze objects from Ireland which are unmatched in the delivery catalogues, these can be found in PRM possibles file [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]
