Chapman in his unpublished D.Phil thesis states that Pitt Rivers purchased items from the United Service Institution when they sold surplus items in June 1861. The sale was conducted by Sotheby's. Actually the United Service Institution held a series of such sales from 1857 although the sale in 1861 was the largest [Chapman, 1981: 68]. [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]
The Sotheby sale referred to by Chapman was held on 25 July 1861 at Sotheby's. The Lugt Number is 26360. There are copies in the British Library and at the Barber Institute. The sale included items from the USI and from Neligan [Dan Hicks 30/07/2013]
