Maori, Nouvelle-Zélande. 19e siècle. Bois. L. 27,5 cm; diam. max. 8 cm. Oxford, Pitt Rivers Museum, inv. 1884.85.11. Le rituel du tatouage chez les Maori en Nouvelle-Zélande était trés tapu. Lors des séances de moko sur le visage, on nourissait les chefs à l'aide d'entonnairs décorés. La nourriture, plus ou moins liquide, ne devait pas toucher les lèvres du patient au risque d'ôter ou de diminuer le caractère sacré - tapu - du travail du tatouer et de le faire échouer. Le tatoueur ne pouvait pas non plus prendre les mets avec ses mains, le sang s'écoulant pendant le tatouage les rendent également trés tapu ..." [JP 30/9/2004]
