Research and responses

This object could have been obtained by Pitt Rivers during his visits to Brittany in October - November 1878 and March - April 1879. He stayed in France during the intervening winter. During the 1878 visit to Brittany he spent the majority of his time around Carnac. [Bowden, 1991: 86-7][Chapman, 1981: 410-2] [Thompson, 1977: 61]. There are a large number of unmatched entries for carved wood panels in the Gren book - see PR Catalogue Part II for further information [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]
