According to an email from Kate Gardner, PRM, dated 13 May 2005 (copy in RDF): 'Some Norwegian visitors visited last weekend and told the attendants about an object we have labeled as a religious item. Acc. no. 1884.58.55 labeled Religious object, prayer stick. They said that these objects are devotional sticks or love tokens traditionally carved by a man and to give to his bride to be. A tradition the lady remembers but has now faded away. They translated the inscription as follows: "I shall cry to the last tear and I will withdraw the blood out of my own veins. I will sell my soul to Satan but will never give up loving you.' [JC 13 5 2005]
