Research and responses

Pitt-Rivers possibly visited Naples in 1851 (see Chapman 1981: chapter 1, p. 14), and Cumae is close by to the west, near the coast - so it is not impossible that he collected this object himself during that trip. [Dan Hicks 19/07/2013]

Pitt-Rivers bought a number of objects at a Sotheby auction on 2 July 1879. The item possibly matches an object in a lot from the sale of the collection of Baron Heath at this sake (Pitt-Rivers also bought other material, including from the James Medurst collection, at that sale): "Lot 13. Seven Roman glass Bottles, tesselated Pavements, Coins, 2 cornelian Scarabaei, and Fragments of bronze and Iron" (Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge 1879: 2). The catalogue is on file in the RDF for 1884.2.1 [Dan Hicks 19/07/2013]
