- Circular wooden shield with a central domed wooden boss and four further metal bosses with scalloped edges. The shield is edged with metal and secured with five decorative metal clips with domed sections. There is a metal hook at one end and a metal parrying spike at the other. [CW [OPS move] 23/8/2016]

Boss of a shield: a prominent circular projection, usually at the centre of the shield, on some shields the boss forms part of the rivets for the handle on the inside, on others the boss was added for its decorative qualities alone.[AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]

1893.68.4Curved oval-shaped wooden shield with a lightly incised symmetrical design on the front which has been painted with black, white and red pigments. At the centre of the wide end of the shield it has been decorated with a fish design. There are two bent cane handles on the reverse of the shield which are threaded through the front.
