- Research and responses
There are 7 objects in total. .1 is the case itself and .2 - .7 are the cartridge cases. .2 and.5 have missing lids. All objects are numbered. On an old vellum label attached to the cases is written in ink 'Caucusus HB' [presumably Henry Balfour'] and in pencil ?in a different hand is written '?Assam'. Small additional label '120'. Note that a similar object has been found, 1938.35.714] which is from Padaung, Karenni State Burma. The similarities between the cases are as follows: size, shape, number and shape of cartridge cases, basketry, both are close weave at the top and bottom and open weave in the centre. Both have a snake like basketry ornament on one side over the open weave although the shape of the snake shape is slightly different. In both objects the strap goes under the entirety of the case. Both straps are woven. There are some differences, this object is much more coated than the 1938 version which is also ornamented with buttons and a metal stud. This object however lacks all the accessories which come with the 1938 case. Without any provenances one would assume that they came from the same source. 1938.35.714 is described as a 'Hunter's waist belt of thick cotton cord with cartouche case and loop-shaped bullet holder both of wicker work and with square tinder pouch of hide'. This object is also very similar to 1925.62.2. [MdeA]
