From 1851 Pitt Rivers was interested in the development of new firearms as a result of his work for the Schools of Musketry. This object was probably part of this work. [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]

Features on a list of Antique firearms [in RDF for 1884.27.61] dated 12th April '99. All muzzle loaders prior to 1939. In the collection this constitutes all matchlock; wheel locks; flintlocks and the great majority of percussion cap firearms, however we do have a number of breech loaders ranging virtually across the nineteenth century.
