Long description
Smooth bore percussion cap long gun with ramrod and separate bayonet [.2]. The gun is muzzle-loading. The gun is stamped and dated 1849 on the lock and brasswork. The gun has a brass buttplate, trigger guard and loops securing the barrel. It has two metal strap loops on the underside.

Research and responses

Possibly collected by Pitt Rivers during his service in the Crimea War [1853-56] in 1854. From 1851 Pitt Rivers was interested in the development of new firearms as a result of his work for the Schools of Musketry. This object was probably part of this work. [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]
