Long description
Sword, schiavona, with straight blade and basket hilt. The basket hilt is produced as a series of flattened bars forming a knucklebow, counter-guard, thumb ring and side ring, all forged together at the quillon block. The hilt is of wood and the steel pommel is incised with the number 388. [LM 16/04/2007]

Research and responses

Presumably collected by Pitt Rivers during his service on Malta (1854 - 1857). C ffoulkes. 1912. 'European Arms and Armour in the University of Oxford' Clarendon Press, Oxford. p34 '21. Schiavona of the XVII cent. The pommel is of flat steel, engraved with 388. The basket-guard is formed of four bars set diagonally with the knuckle-bar on one side and two bars in the reverse direction on the other, all of thin steel. The thumb-ring is inside the guard. The blade is 31 1/2 in x 1 1/4 in single edged for 22 1/2 in where it becomes double-edged to the point. Pitt Rivers coll 1039' [illustration] .
